Tūhono

Tūhono is a mentoring programme for young people aged 12-15 within the Wellington region. ‘Tūhono’ means to connect; with young people, kura and whānau. Tūhono youth workers aim to connect with the young people through active play and support for their overall health and well-being. Tūhono uses Adventure-Based Therapy (ABT) activities to connect and help young people build on their strengths and confidence.

Tūhono youth workers work closely with kura (school) to ensure communication and a holistic approach is upheld. We also work alongside whānau, connecting with them regularly via phone calls, text and in person meetings. Working with whānau is a crucial aspect to the programme as it allows youth workers to advocate and connect with whānau, to overall support the young people and their Hauora.

Tūhono focuses on mentoring support and working toward goals created by the young people so they can achieve and thrive in their home, school, and community. Tūhono youth workers aim to connect with the young people on a weekly to fortnightly basis. They work closely with various kura in the Wellington region, and visit their school to meet the young people for mentoring, this further integrates support into the young people’s everyday lives.
