Journeys

Journeys is set up to provide fun, mainly sports-based programmes, which utilise a Te Ao Māori approach. We build a sense of belonging – of whānau – with teenage rangatahi, while they discover and develop new skills over the course of a year.

The project is based in Lower Hutt at Taitā College, in partnership with the local Ricoh Sports Centre at Fraser Park Sportsville. Our Journeys youth mentors and volunteers head up throughout the week to hang out and practice after school with young people from the area.

Past programmes have focused on dancing, boxing, art, netball, wāhine well-being, rugby, makeup, and squash. In experimenting with activities like these, young people are able to step outside of their everyday experiences and explore alternative futures for themselves.

Journeys also prototyped the innovative, purpose-built mobile gym, Domynis, which started its life in Taitā and is now bringing education and opportunity to whānau in Hawke’s Bay!

Young people come out of Journeys having developed resilience, self-esteem, leadership ability, and an understanding of the importance of teamwork. He waka eke noa – we're all in this together!
